Process Design and Technology Selection for Plate Mill

Theses days, due to widespread use of steel products, its production and consumption rate is considered as a criteria of development in each country. Steel product lines have been installed in the country to complete production chain, but a few plate mills are considered. Plates are widely used in the production of tanks, steel structures, ships, pressure vessels and  transmission line of oil and petroleum.

Hot rolling process is the production method of this product and is done on slabs produced by continuous casting method. The selection of the technical specifications of the hot rolling process according to the requirements is very important because for example two general methods in flat products with the title of reversible rolling and continuous rolling are common in the world that, these have major differences and the process must be chosen with consideration of all aspects. Likewise, selection of mill configuration and type of equipment used in design will affect the quality of the product (plate geometrical shape, thickness tolerance, flatness and etc.) directly that emphasis on importance of choosing the right equipment, process and design. On the opposite, wrong choice will lead to waste of financial resources, not achieving the desired quality and even impossibility of producing some products.

This project was done for Faraz Pooyan Damavand Company which is located in Isfahan. Process design and technology selection with the aim of producing plate for capacity of 200,000 tons per year of plate in the first phase and 400,000 tons per year in the next phase was done by Aaran Steel & Equipment Co.

At the end of this project a training course with the subject of rolling fundamentals and plate mill was conducted to transfer the knowledge to client.
